CARIBBEAN NIGHT: 31st Annual Martin Luther King Concert Series at Wingate Park in Brooklyn!

On Monday, August 5th, CARIBBEAN SOCIALITES attended the 31st Annual Martin Luther King Concert Series that takes place every Monday night during July and August. This event is hosted by Marty Markowitz, Borough President of Brooklyn. Last night was Caribbean night which featured three artists: The Mighty Sparrow, KES The Band & Morgan Heritage. Hundreds of people came out to this magnificent concert which is always free by the way every summer. It’s a way of saying thank you to the wonderful people of the Five Boroughs and beyond. Other hosts like Disc Jockey Dahved Levy  of WBLS, 107.5fm kept the crowd going. The crowd included people representing every island possible. Flags were waving everywhere. All ages attended to celebrate life and love of Caribbean music.
Let us give you a little history of the Musical Artists!
The Mighty Sparrow:

Sparrow, also known as "Birdie" is a songwriter, calypso singer, and guitarist. Crowned the "Calypso King of the World," he is one of the most popular and successful artists. He has won Trinidad's Road March competition eight times and has been crowned Calypso Monarch eleven times. He is a legend and in the History books of Music and Caribbean culture. Every year he has been an act for Caribbean night with familiar tunes such as Salt Fish, Jean & Dinah, Congo Man and Melda.

 KES The Band:

Kes (also known as Kes the Band or KTB) is a soca based band created in 2005. Their musical style mainly consists of soca, inspired by calypso and reggae, with elements from other genres such as rock and dance music. Caribbean Pop or Island Pop may be a better way to describe the style of music. The band consists of Kees, Hans, Riad and Jon. Kees, Hans and Jon are brothers. High energy live performances are something that you will definitely see from this group of happy performers. This band has captured attention and hearts of so many fans. They are one of the most popular bands in Trinidad and Tobago, throughout the Caribbean and US, Worldwide. KES sang melodic songs including “Thief a Wine, their most famous song, thus far, “Wotless”, “Tuesday on the Rocks”, “Where Yuh From” and more. They left the crowd wanting more and ended their stage show with a bang!

Morgan Heritage:

Morgan Heritage is a Reggae band created  in 1994 by five children of reggae artist Denroy Morgan, Peter "Peetah" Morgan, Una Morgan, Roy "Gramps" Morgan, Nakhamyah "Lukes" Morgan and Memo "Mr. Mojo" Morgan. In two decades, they have had a number of successful reggae albums. They are a group that will mellow out a crowd with songs like “Don’t Haffi Be Dread” and “Tell Me How Come”. They have numerous albums. They are about to release another one as we speak, in which the Album release Party for “Here Come the Kings” at SOBs Restaurant and Night Club tonight, August 6th. Morgan Heritage is a historical band singing about love, culture and oppression of a people.

We, as Caribbean Socialites love the fact that our people can attend events, intentionally to gather among others to sing, appreciate music, dance and enjoy our cultural foods. We look forward to every summer to attend this great event. It was spectacular!

CARIBBEAN SOCIALITES ATTEND: "FLOAT! MACHEL MONTANO HD// AN ULTIMATE YACHT EXPERIENCE"

CARIBBEAN SOCIALITES attended FLOAT, a spectacular two-day event on June 26th and June 27th, where Machel Montano HD kicked off his Summer Concert Series on the Infinity Yacht. It was the ambiance that would define elegance. After security standards, you were welcomed by the New York City skyline that led you into this gorgeous yacht, which had four levels. It was 'breath-taking', indeed. Attendees explored the yacht out of curiosity. The sounds of sweet Soca music bellowed through the air . As attendees started arriving  at a faster pace, they stood right in front of the stage awaiting Machel and the HD Family. Dancing was almost immediate as the DJs kept the party patrons on their feet and their waist lines intact.

The bartenders served drinks with polite smiles and generosity. The DJs repeatedly saluted many islands, such as St. Vincent, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and Guyana and of course the twin islands of Trinidad & Tobago. Party goers raised their flags feeling a sense of pride, representing where they came from. Stylish attire, sleek hairstyles and edgy shoes were displayed as ladies came out to impress. Gents were casual in resort wear.

SHOWTIME! Vibesman Redman was the Host and he kept the crowd laughing and enjoying themselves which accentuated the hype for the performance. As the crowd couldn’t wait anymore, Machel runs onstage, full of energy starting off the performance with THE FOG, a tune from this year that won the title of Trinidad’s Groovy Soca Monarch. He continued on with other songs from the 2013 Carnival season, then onto some of his past renditions. Patrice Roberts, a sultry soca artist who can be also be known as Machel’s sexy protégée, wowed the crowd with her dance moves and popular songs, such as “A Little Wine”, “I Am Soca” and “Permission Granted”. Farmer Nappy also blessed the stage with his familiar tunes, “Minglin” & “Stranger” and more songs collaborated with Machel over the past years when he was with the band formerly known as Xtatik. The crowd went crazy with songs like Big Truck and Unity, a song shared by Drupatee Ramgoonai. “Are you ready to go home?!” The crowd yelled back, “NO!!” Machel kept the crowd wanting more and more as the yacht was almost ready to dock, he started singing, “We not staying down! We getting’ off de ground!” The crowd repeated and sang “Float!”, as Machel made gestures of Superman flying on stage and had everyone stomping as if they were playing Mas, getting ready to cross the stage. Before the performance ended, Machel thanked everyone for being so supportive of him since the beginning of his music career and he set the stage for another Yacht ride on Labor Day weekend, which is the biggest party weekend for West Indian patrons. This yacht ride was definitely a great event as it was a celebration of Life, Soca Music and of course Caribbean Socialites.
