On Monday, August 5th, CARIBBEAN SOCIALITES attended the 31st Annual Martin Luther King Concert Series that takes place every Monday night during July and August. This event is hosted by Marty Markowitz, Borough President of Brooklyn. Last night was Caribbean night which featured three artists: The Mighty Sparrow, KES The Band & Morgan Heritage. Hundreds of people came out to this magnificent concert which is always free by the way every summer. It’s a way of saying thank you to the wonderful people of the Five Boroughs and beyond. Other hosts like Disc Jockey Dahved Levy of WBLS, 107.5fm kept the crowd going. The crowd included people representing every island possible. Flags were waving everywhere. All ages attended to celebrate life and love of Caribbean music.
Let us give you a little history of the Musical Artists!
Sparrow, also known as "Birdie" is a songwriter, calypso singer, and guitarist. Crowned the "Calypso King of the World," he is one of the most popular and successful artists. He has won Trinidad's Road March competition eight times and has been crowned Calypso Monarch eleven times. He is a legend and in the History books of Music and Caribbean culture. Every year he has been an act for Caribbean night with familiar tunes such as Salt Fish, Jean & Dinah, Congo Man and Melda.
KES The Band:
KES The Band:
Kes (also known as Kes the Band or KTB) is a soca based band created in 2005. Their musical style mainly consists of soca, inspired by calypso and reggae, with elements from other genres such as rock and dance music. Caribbean Pop or Island Pop may be a better way to describe the style of music. The band consists of Kees, Hans, Riad and Jon. Kees, Hans and Jon are brothers. High energy live performances are something that you will definitely see from this group of happy performers. This band has captured attention and hearts of so many fans. They are one of the most popular bands in Trinidad and Tobago, throughout the Caribbean and US, Worldwide. KES sang melodic songs including “Thief a Wine, their most famous song, thus far, “Wotless”, “Tuesday on the Rocks”, “Where Yuh From” and more. They left the crowd wanting more and ended their stage show with a bang!
Morgan Heritage:

Morgan Heritage is a Reggae band created in 1994 by five children of reggae artist Denroy Morgan, Peter "Peetah" Morgan, Una Morgan, Roy "Gramps" Morgan, Nakhamyah "Lukes" Morgan and Memo "Mr. Mojo" Morgan. In two decades, they have had a number of successful reggae albums. They are a group that will mellow out a crowd with songs like “Don’t Haffi Be Dread” and “Tell Me How Come”. They have numerous albums. They are about to release another one as we speak, in which the Album release Party for “Here Come the Kings” at SOBs Restaurant and Night Club tonight, August 6th. Morgan Heritage is a historical band singing about love, culture and oppression of a people.
We, as Caribbean Socialites love the fact that our people can attend events, intentionally to gather among others to sing, appreciate music, dance and enjoy our cultural foods. We look forward to every summer to attend this great event. It was spectacular!
